Color Matching and Panel Blending
Symptoms
Signs you need this work
- Previous repair panel visibly different in color
- Replacement panel needing to match a faded vehicle
- Repair boundary visible in direct sunlight
Matching the vehicle, not the code
Factory paint codes describe the color the vehicle was built in. After several years of Southern California sun that color has moved, and a panel sprayed to the original code will be noticeably brighter than everything around it.
We read the existing panel with a spectrophotometer, produce a formula for the color as it is now, spray a test card, and verify the match under multiple light sources before touching the vehicle. Metamerism is real: two colors that match under shop lights can be visibly different in daylight.
- Spectrophotometer reading of the actual panel
- Test card verification under multiple light sources
- Blending into adjacent panels to hide the transition
- Metallic and pearl orientation control
- Formula recorded for future repairs on the same vehicle
Why blending matters more on metallics
Solid colors are relatively forgiving. Metallics and pearls are not, because the appearance depends on how the flake lies down, which varies with spray technique and even with the specific gun setup.
On a metallic, a hard edge at the panel boundary will show even when the color is a perfect match. Blending out into the adjacent panel means there is no line for the eye to find.
