# Insulation and Sound Deadening

Insulation and sound deadening treat the walls, floor, ceiling, and doors of a van to reduce heat transfer and road noise. On vehicles where crew work from the vehicle or spend long hours in it, the difference in working conditions is substantial.

Range: $750 to $4,500

Collision estimates for insurance claim walk-ins carry no charge. Systems estimates are $150 and diagnostics are $285 per hour, both credited against an authorized repair.


## Two different problems

Sound deadening and thermal insulation are not the same material doing two jobs. Deadening is mass applied to panels to stop them resonating. Insulation is low conductivity material filling cavities to slow heat transfer.

Doing only one gets you a van that is quiet and hot, or cool and loud. Most builds want both, applied in the right order and in the right places.

- Constrained layer damping on large panels
- Cavity insulation in walls, ceiling and doors

## Questions

**Is insulation worth it on a delivery van?**

On a van where the driver is in and out all day, less so. On one where a technician works out of the vehicle for hours, or carries temperature-sensitive material, it is worth it.

**Will insulation cause condensation?**

Only if vapor management is ignored. Warm humid air reaching a cold panel condenses. Correct installation prevents that.

**How much quieter does it get?**

The change is most noticeable at freeway speed and on rough surfaces. Drivers consistently report it as one of the more appreciated upgrades.
