# Clear Coat Restoration and UV Protection

Clear coat restoration addresses the transparent protective layer that fails first on fleet vehicles. Where the clear has thinned but not delaminated it can be cut and polished. Where it has peeled or flaked, the affected area must be stripped and resprayed, because clear cannot be applied over failing clear.

Range: $500 to $6,500

Collision estimates for insurance claim walk-ins carry no charge. Systems estimates are $150 and diagnostics are $285 per hour, both credited against an authorized repair.

## Symptoms

- Cloudy or milky patches on horizontal surfaces
- Clear peeling or flaking at panel edges
- Dull chalky finish that will not polish up
- Roof and hood degraded well ahead of the sides

## Restore or respray

Clear coat that has oxidized but is still intact can be cut back and polished, which brings the gloss back and costs a fraction of refinishing. Clear that has started to peel cannot be saved, because whatever is applied over it will come off with it.

The test is simple. If the surface is dull but continuous, it can be restored. If there is a visible edge where the clear has lifted, that area needs stripping and respraying.

## Why roofs fail first

Horizontal surfaces take the most UV, so roofs and hoods almost always fail before the sides. On a box truck the roof is often the only surface that has failed, which makes a roof-only refinish a sensible and much cheaper intervention than doing the whole vehicle.

Catching it at the roof stage is the difference between a targeted repair and a full respray two years later.

## Questions

**Can peeling clear coat be polished out?**

No. Once it has lifted, polishing removes more of it and accelerates the failure. Peeling clear has to be stripped and the area resprayed.

**How long does clear coat last in Southern California?**

Typically eight to twelve years on a well maintained vehicle, less on horizontal surfaces and less again on a vehicle that lives outdoors without any sealant maintenance.

**Does ceramic coating help?**

It helps meaningfully on a sound finish by adding UV and chemical resistance and by making the surface easier to clean. It does nothing for a clear coat that has already begun to fail.
