# Liftgate Installation and Repair

Liftgate work covers new installation, replacement, and repair of hydraulic lift equipment on cargo bodies. Installation includes structural mounting to the frame, hydraulic plumbing, and electrical supply sized for the gate's draw under load.

Range: $1,500 to $8,500

Collision estimates for insurance claim walk-ins carry no charge. Systems estimates are $150 and diagnostics are $285 per hour, both credited against an authorized repair.

## Symptoms

- Gate lifts slowly or will not lift a rated load
- Hydraulic fluid leaking at a cylinder or hose
- Platform bent or not sitting flat
- Gate drifts down when parked
- Gate will not respond to the control

## Installation is a structural job

A liftgate applies a large cantilever load to the rear of the chassis on every cycle. Mounting has to transfer that into the frame rails across a spread footprint. Bolting a gate to a light crossmember concentrates the load and eventually cracks it.

Electrical is the other half. A gate that draws heavily under load needs cable sized for the run and a supply that will not sag, otherwise the gate gets progressively slower and the motor eventually fails from undervoltage.

- Chassis capacity and frame section verification
- Fabricated structural mounting into the frame rails
- Hydraulic system plumbing and bleed
- Correctly sized power cable and disconnect
- Control and safety interlock installation
- Load cycle testing before release

## Questions

**Why does my liftgate drift down overnight?**

Usually internal cylinder seal bypass or a leaking holding valve. Both are repairable and neither should be ignored, since a gate that drifts can also drop under load.

**My gate has become slow. Is the pump failing?**

Sometimes, but more often it is electrical. Voltage drop under load is the most common cause and it is much cheaper to fix than a pump.

**Can you install a gate on a used truck we just bought?**

Yes, subject to the chassis having the capacity. That check comes first.
