# DOT Reflective and Conspicuity Marking

Conspicuity marking is the reflective tape required on commercial trailers and truck bodies to make them visible at night. Placement, pattern, and material grade are specified by regulation, and marking that has peeled or been painted over no longer satisfies it.

Range: $250 to $1,200

Collision estimates for insurance claim walk-ins carry no charge. Systems estimates are $150 and diagnostics are $285 per hour, both credited against an authorized repair.


## Installed to specification

Conspicuity tape has requirements for placement, coverage pattern, and material grade. Approximating those is a common finding during roadside inspection, and it is trivially avoidable.

We install to the specification and replace tape that has degraded, peeled, or been painted over during a previous refinish.

## Questions

**How often does conspicuity tape need replacing?**

When it has lost reflectivity, peeled, or been damaged. There is no fixed interval, but tape that has been on a trailer for a decade in California sun is usually no longer performing.

**Can you reapply after a repaint?**

Yes, and that is the normal sequence. Tape has to come off for refinishing and goes back on after.

**Does this apply to box trucks as well as trailers?**

The requirements depend on vehicle class and weight rating. We will tell you what applies to your specific units.
