# Fiberglass Crack and Puncture Repair

Fiberglass repair rebuilds cracked and punctured laminate by grinding back to sound material, laying new glass and resin in a tapered scarf, then fairing and refinishing. The repair restores the panel's structural continuity rather than only its appearance.

Range: $750 to $12,000 and up

Collision estimates for insurance claim walk-ins carry no charge. Systems estimates are $150 and diagnostics are $285 per hour, both credited against an authorized repair.

## Symptoms

- Visible crack radiating from a corner or a fastener
- Puncture or hole from impact
- Spider cracking in the gelcoat
- Previous repair telegraphing back through the paint

## Laminate, do not fill

The correct repair grinds the damaged area back to sound laminate in a tapered scarf, which gives the new material enough bonded area to carry load across the joint. New glass and resin are laid up in stages, then faired and refinished.

Filling a crack with body filler bridges the gap without restoring any strength. The panel keeps flexing, the crack keeps moving, and it reappears through the paint within a year.

## Questions

**Why did my last fiberglass repair crack again?**

Almost certainly because it was filled rather than laminated. Filler has no tensile strength across the joint, so the panel keeps flexing at that point and the crack returns.

**Can you repair spider cracking?**

Yes. Spider cracking is usually gelcoat rather than structural, and it is addressed by removing the affected gelcoat and refinishing. If it is a symptom of flex, the underlying stiffness has to be addressed too.

**Do you repair from behind the panel?**

Where access allows, yes, and it makes a stronger repair. Where the back is not accessible we build the strength into the scarfed laminate from the front.
