# Your Reefer Runs Constantly After a Panel Repair. Here Is Why

A repair that restores the outer skin but leaves crushed or wet foam behind it creates a thermal bridge. The unit works continuously trying to compensate.

If a refrigerated body runs harder after a panel repair than it did before, the repair almost certainly
restored the skin without replacing the insulation behind it. That leaves a thermal bridge, and the
unit runs continuously trying to hold set point against it.

## An insulated panel is a sandwich

Outer skin, closed cell foam core, inner liner. The skin keeps weather out and the liner takes cargo
contact, but the foam is what actually does the insulating.

An impact that dents the skin also crushes the foam behind it. Crushed foam has lost its cell structure
permanently. Water entering through a breach saturates it, and closed cell foam that has taken water
holds it and does not recover its insulation value.

Skinning over either condition hides the problem and fixes nothing.

## How to spot it

**Condensation or frost on one area of the interior wall.** This is the clearest indicator. That patch
is colder than the surrounding wall because heat is coming through there.

**Runtime that went up after a repair.** If your fuel or hours data shows the unit working harder since
the bodywork, that is the reason.

**A localized temperature variation in the load.** Product nearest the repaired area running warmer
than the rest.

**Visible waviness or bulging** in the panel, indicating separation between skin and core.

## The repair that lasts

Open the panel. Remove all crushed and wet core rather than the visibly damaged part of it, because
water travels laterally in a damaged core well past the impact point.

Install new insulation, restore the vapor barrier at the repair perimeter, and re-skin both faces with
a properly sealed edge. The perimeter seal is what stops the same failure recurring around the edges of
your repair.

It costs more than a skin patch. It is also the version that is still holding in three years and not
costing you fuel every single day in between.

## Door seals are the cheaper win

Before assuming a panel problem, check the door seals. They are the most common source of thermal loss
on any refrigerated body, they are inexpensive to replace, and they are almost universally neglected.

A seal that has hardened, taken a permanent set, or is closing against a door that has dropped will
leak continuously. Note that a new seal on a misaligned door does not help: the seal can only close an
even gap, so the door alignment has to be corrected first.

## Why this matters more in Orange County

Ambient temperature drives how hard the unit has to work. On a hot afternoon here, a thermal bridge that
was a minor inefficiency in mild weather becomes the difference between holding set point and not.

For food and pharmaceutical operators that is a compliance exposure rather than an efficiency one.

## What to do with a unit you suspect

## What a correct repair costs relative to the wrong one

A skin-only patch is cheap and fast. That is why it happens.

A correct repair opens the panel, removes wet or crushed core well beyond the visible damage, installs
new insulation, restores the vapor barrier, and re-skins both faces with a sealed perimeter. It costs
more and takes longer.

The comparison people miss is that the cheap version has an ongoing cost attached to it. A thermal
bridge makes the unit run harder every single day it operates. Over a couple of seasons in Southern
California heat, the fuel and runtime difference exceeds what the correct repair would have cost.

That is before counting the risk to a load, which for food and pharmaceutical operators is the
number that actually matters.

## Diagnosing it yourself

You do not need equipment to get a strong indication.

Run the unit down to set point, then feel the interior wall with the back of your hand across the area
in question. A thermal bridge is noticeably colder than the surrounding wall. In humid conditions it
will collect condensation or frost while the rest of the wall stays dry.

Compare against the equivalent area on the opposite wall. Symmetry makes the difference obvious in a
way an absolute reading does not.

If you have an infrared thermometer, the same comparison in numbers is quicker and less ambiguous.

## Preventing the underlying damage

Reefer bodies get damaged the same way dry bodies do, mostly during loading. The difference is that on
an insulated body the consequence is permanent rather than cosmetic.

**Line the interior.** A liner takes the forklift contact instead of the panel. Replacing a liner panel
is a fraction of the cost of opening an insulated wall.

**Treat any skin penetration as urgent.** Water in the core does not dry out and does not recover. A
same-week repair on a small breach avoids a large one later.

**Check door seals quarterly.** They are the cheapest thermal loss on the vehicle and they are almost
always the most neglected. A hardened seal costs very little to replace and pays for itself in
runtime.

**Watch runtime data.** If you have telematics on the reefer units, a unit whose runtime creeps up
relative to its peers is telling you something before anyone notices a temperature problem.

## Getting a second opinion on existing work

If a reefer has been repaired elsewhere and the unit has run harder since, that is worth investigating
rather than accepting.

previous repair. Sounding is quick, it is non-destructive, and it tells you whether the foam behind
that patch is intact or whether it was skinned over.

The result is either reassurance that the repair was done properly, or an explanation for a runtime
problem that has probably been costing money since the day the vehicle went back into service. Either
answer is worth having.
